Her story is about the \u2018essential\u2019 aspects of life which incorporates thought, experience, and questions occurred during the \u2018movement\u2019 of travel.<\/p>\n<p>  In <em>Seo-Yu-Rok<\/em>, the purpose of the trip is listed as follows: \u201cwhen I left home, the objective of my travel was first, consolation, second, taking care of the health issue of my daughter, third, sightseeing.\u201d<span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">3<\/span> Her first goal concerns the sadness of losing her first great-grandson and his mother, and the next one is an obvious desire as a mother to tend to her ailing child. The last goal of touring reveals the writer\u2019s immense curiosity and active character, and most of the story is about this aspect. After the annexation on the 1st of October 1910, Japan established their Government-General, and ripped away all fundamental rights to oppress the Koreans. In <em>Seo-Yu-Rok<\/em>, Kim notes \u201cI asked around for details, and I was told that the Korean Volunteer Army had passed this way six years ago and that the village is in bad shape since the Japanese soldiers came and killed people and burnt down houses. Hearing this, I could hardly hide my anger.\u201d She also adds her observation that the deployment of Japanese military police stations was quite thorough all the way to Seoul, even in tiny, underpopulated towns. Since the military police system was implemented even before the annexation, the Japanese influence had already taken root even in small towns at the time.<\/p>\n<p>  Additionally, given the fairly conservative social atmosphere, it would have been extremely difficult for a woman from a rural area to travel to Seoul. Nevertheless, for various reasons, she had departed on the 13th of August. Chuseok(Korean Thanksgiving holiday) was approaching, and her attitude of going on a trip was quite bold and outspoken for a woman of that era, given the situation of most wives having lots of work to do for the preparation of the holidays. It is quite clear that Lady Kim thought it is a huge pity if \u201cone could not visit Seoul before getting too old.\u201d Through <em>Seo-Yu-Rok<\/em>, we can tell that the times were dire, living in a colonized country as a woman, since the social structure was not democratic either. However, she manages to go on the road and finally concentrates on realizing her desired values.<\/p>\n<p>  According to Georg Simmel\u2019s <em>The Adventure<\/em>, \u201cthe most general form of adventure is its dropping out of the continuity of life.\u201d, \u201cThey(=contents of the experience) become adventure only by virtue of a certain experiential tension whereby their substance is realized.\u201d, \u201cThe quantity of these tensions becoming great enough to tear life, beyond those materials, completely out of itself: this is what transforms mere experience into adventure.\u201d An adventure consists of dropping out of the continuity of life, but Simmel elaborates further that \u201can action is completely torn out of the inclusive context of life and that simultaneously the whole strength and intensity of life stream into it.\u201d<span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">4<\/span> Lady Kim is totally open to all external stimuli and fortuitous happenings throughout her entire journey. She especially enjoys the modernized landscape of Seoul, the tram, and the encounter with female students. Equally, she appears to enjoy moving about by her own will, a mode of self-realization. In this \u2018duality of attitude\u2019, her way of experiencing is similar to the notion of adventure explained by Simmel. This kind of adventure deviates from the central trajectory of life, but a certain main emotion penetrates through one\u2019s life. The adventurer is influenced by contingency while building up such an emotion. In other words, Lady Kim creates new meaning and accepts inevitability in her life based on the gap between \u2018integrating life and meaning\u2019 and \u2018accidental adventures.\u2019 Thus she is an adventurer who has realized her own agendas and puts into practice the critical meaning of her life.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dual Stranger <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>  Another axis of curation for <em>Tale of a City II<\/em> was the location as a stranger through travel and changing locations. <em>Seo-Yu-Rok<\/em> is a travelog that begins its itinerary from hometown Gangneung, to Seoul on foot, recording sightseeing in Seoul (Incheon) and the journey returning home. This is essentially a story about the change in identity that one experiences while repeatedly experiencing encounters and farewells, getting farther from home and closer to the destination, after leaving the place you belong to for a certain period of time. In the preface of the book introducing this travelog, it states, \u201cNo matter the reason for traveling, it is the act of meeting other people and experiencing first hand different places and cultures\u2026 In this respect, the travelog is a record of relationships that clearly shows the encounter between the subject and the other.\u201d<span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">5<\/span><\/p>\n<p>  A good example is the encounter with \u2018female\u2019 students for the first time in her life. \u201cI had only heard of a women\u2019s school, but I actually met female students for real\u2026\u201d Lady Kim asks them questions. \u201cWhen I asked \u2018what are you learning for and is it not difficult to learn?\u2019 they answered \u2018it is inevitable to learn the Chinese characters and it is indeed quite difficult to learn.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>  This conversation plays a role in creating new values that are necessary for the society and simultaneously for an individual\u2019s identity, continuing to influence one\u2019s life. Byung-Chul Han describes the existence of the other as follows. \u201cIt is thus in the gaze and the voice that the entirely Other manifests itself.\u201d<span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">6<\/span>, \u201cThe Selfsame has a form, an inner collectedness, an inwardness that is due to its difference from the Other.\u201d<span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">7<\/span> His idea is that through the experience of physical confrontation with the other, humans grow and come to terms with their own thoughts. In summary, traveling to a foreign land presupposes confrontation with the other, and opposition with the other expands oneself. Simmel also viewed the essence of the stranger, based on the premise of confrontation with the other, as a heterogeneous element that is not present in another community. In this respect, Lady Kim is a stranger at both places. She morphed into another being who absorbs new lifestyle and norms from new communities and transplants them into the space she belongs to. Hence she is an existential figure who visits a new society, accepts new values while respecting her essential values, and imports cultural ideas to mix with traditions, as a spark of new values in her original habitat. The author of Treasure Island Robert Louis Stevenson famously said, \u201cThere are no foreign lands. It is the traveler only who is foreign.\u201d That is, everybody becomes a foreigner in an unfamiliar place. She is a dual stranger who had faced the others with respective different cultural elements, and absorbed them to recompose newly set ideas and systems within herself and her society.<\/p>\n<p><strong> Traveling the City of Art <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>  We should not forget that <em>Tale of a City II<\/em> was made possible since the specificity of the site and context of Gangneung had made it ever so special. As Koreans we are familiar with Gangneung\u2019s long history and culture, represented by figures such as Shin Saimdang, Yulgok Lee, Heo Gyun, Heo Nanseolheon, and monuments such as Seongyojang, and tradition such as Gangneung Danoje Festival. The city was already rich in cultural attributes that allowed facile visualization, and abundant internal and external factors helped create the image of the site which could be maintained even after the festival ends. All of this translates to an excellent urban space for art festivals. From the early stages of planning, the GIAF team had set four criteria when discovering and deciding on a space before preparing for the exhibition through continuous visits and research (as last year). First criterion is trying to use a regenerative space; a place once used for a certain purpose but now functioning as a venue, and Dongbu Market and Okcheon-dong Warehouse were chosen for this category. Both venues required permission of use, so our team had to convince the related people and once we obtained the permission, they were totally supportive. The elderly owner of Okcheon-dong venue was especially kind to us, occasionally bringing pumpkins and other vegetables that he had grown himself. Second, making most of the city\u2019s surrounding which boasts mountains, the sea and the lake. Moreover, the National Center for Forest Therapy located on the old road of Daegwallyeong should not be missed in this year\u2019s exhibition. And thirdly, as a cultural space, providing citizens with encounters with new artists and their works in a venue already recognized as a space to experience culture and art. The fourth criterion is a figure of Gangneung. Similar to last year, we focused on actual citizens rather than notable historical figures. They were members of cooperative organizations and program participants, including Danoje researcher, forest educator, human rights activist, Gangneung Haeram Middle School KSL (Korean as a Second Language) teacher and students, and the Ieul School in Okgye-myeon board director and students.<\/p>\n<p>  While preparing for the exhibitions, the texts of <em>Seo-Yu-Rok<\/em> were shared with the participant artists and a conversation began. Although the curatorial direction sprang from a rather personal narrative of a specific city, the artists were able to grasp its uni-versality and authenticity ahead of planning their creations. Some treated <em>Seo-Yu- Rok<\/em> or the city as a subject matter in accordance with their original creative methods, and some interpreted the theme through various media. There were obviously some obstacles, as well. As we were to exhibit art in certain spaces that were rented or unused for a while, it was a big challenge since we were helplessly exposed to doubt, restrictions, insects, dust and mold. Nevertheless, the artists \u2018moved\u2019 together from the starting point to the destination like a flock of migratory birds flying in one direction. They succeeded in creating works that show that ultimately, the exhibition space cannot be separated from its surrounding environment.<\/p>\n<p>  Proust had said that \u201cThe real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.\u201d This Festival has carved Lady Kim of Gangneung as an adventurer and stranger, to attempt in a sort of exploration which pursues meaning for modern people living in the \u2018era of movement.\u2019 At the center of it all, there are the pioneers who make this adventure trendy. The artists!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Afterword<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>  I am deeply grateful to the Chairman and the Foundation for their excellent support.
