로사 바바는 조각적 관점으로 영화의 개념과 산업을 탐구하고, 문화를 관찰하는 작업을 이어오고 있다. 이번 페스티벌에서 선보이는 <Inside the Outset: Evoking a Space of Passage>는 영화의 매체적 특성과 구성 방식에 대해 질문하는 작품이다. 실험적인 다큐멘터리와 허구적 내러티브 사이를 다룬 이 작품은 사이프러스 해안가에서 발견한 마 마조토스 난파선을 촬영했다. 대한민국처럼 남과 북으로 대립 중인 분단국가인 사이프러스는 유엔이 관리하는 ‘그린 라인’이라고 불리는 완충지대가 있다. 작가는 그린 라인에 야외 영화관을 설치하는 과정을 보여주며, 공간을 둘러싸고 충돌하는 다양한 관점과 이해관계를 예술적 접근으로 조망한다.

Rosa Barba, based on a sculptural perspective, explores the concept of film and its industry by presenting her observations on culture and guiding the audience’s contemplation. In the work, Inside the Outset: Evoking a Space of Passage, the structure of film and its specificity as a medium is questioned. Navigating between experimental documentary and fictional narratives, the work was shot at the wreckage of Mazotos off the coast of Cyprus. Cyprus, a divided nation like South and North Korea, has a buffer zone known as the ‘Green Line’ managed by the United Nations. By showing the process of setting up an outdoor cinema in the Green Line, Rosa Barba provides an artistic perspective on the conflicting viewpoints and relationships surrounding the space.

<Stellar Populations>는 모터에 의해 움직이는 라이트 박스 내부에 35mm 필름 스트립이 통제할 수 없는 움직임에 의해 무질서하게 움직이는 필름의 모습을 볼 수 있다. 영화를 ‘보는 것’을 넘어 프로젝터, 스크린 등의 물질적인 것에도 집중해오고 있는 작가는 조각적인 접근을 통해 영화가 공간을 표현하는 방식을 분석하고 작품과 관람객 사이에 새로운 관계를 설정한다.

Beyond merely ‘watching’ a film, Rosa Barba has been focusing on the material aspects of cinema, including
projectors and screens. Through installations and site-specific interventions, the artist illustrates how the space
is expressed and reflected through time, positioning the viewers in new temporal and spatial contexts.

로사 바바는 쾰른 미디어 아트 아카데미를 졸업한 후 암스테르담에 있는 국립미술 아카데미 반 빌덴데 쿤스텐에서 펠로우십을 받았다. 작가는 조각적 관점으로 영화 개념과 산업을 탐구하고, 문화를 관찰하는 작업으로 관람객의 사유를 끌어낸다. 또한 장소 특정적 설치 작업으로 공간에 개입해, 시간에 따라 공간을 표현하고 반영하는 방식을 분석하며 관람객을 새로운 시공간에 위치시킨다.

작가는 테이트 모던(런던, 2023), 퐁피두 센터(파리, 2023), 노이에 내셔널 갤러리(베를린, 2021-2022), 파크 애비뉴 아모리(뉴욕, 2019), 국립 소피아 왕비 예술센터(마드리드, 2017) 등 전 세계 주요 미술 기관에서 작업을 선보였다. 제32회 상파울루 비엔날레(2016), 제56회와 제53회 베니스 비엔날레(2015, 2009), 제6회 리버풀 비엔날레(2010)에 참여했으며, 2020년에 칼더재단이 수여하는 칼더상을 수상한 바 있다.

Rosa Barba studied at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne and later received a fellowship at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. Based on a sculptural perspective, Rosa Barba explores the concept of film and its industry by presenting her observations on culture and guiding the audience’s contemplation. Through installations and site-specific interventions, the artist illustrates how the space is expressed and reflected through time, positioning the viewers in new temporal and spatial contexts.

The artist’s work has been exhibited internationally at Tate Modern(London, 2023), Neue Nationalgalerie (Berlin, 2021-2022), Armory Park Avenue(New York, 2019), Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Palacio de Cristal(Madrid, 2017). The artist participated in the 32nd São Paulo Biennial(2016), the 56th and 53rd Venice Biennale(2015, 2009), the 6th Liverpool Biennale (2010).
